Loveliness and Laughter Among the Living

I haven’t written an “advice” post for quite some time and I think the reason being, I’ve just been too focused on all the positive things happening in my life that I feel unqualified to say much.

However, the reason I’ve been able to focus on the good things more might be a good tidbit to share!

I’ve always “known” that the focus of the mind is what really matters. It’s what gets things done and life moving. Sadly, I don’t think it completely registered until I read one of the best inspirational “self-help” books I’ve found so far. I have “self-help” in quotes because it isn’t so much self-help as much as, this should be common knowledge because it’s so basic and such a simple mindset that everyone should know it. But, like me, a lot of people “know” things but either it hasn’t been said in a way that it really gets stuck in the brain or they honestly haven’t been privy to the kind of experiences and knowledge that I have had access to. At the same time, the information is there for everyone, if you choose to search for it.

The book I’m talking about is

Movement on Dreams, Stand Under None

Movement on Dreams, Stand Under None

called “Did I Ever Wake Up” by Mod Sun. AMAZING BOOK. It’s only 70 pages and $25, I think everyone should invest in this book. He is a drummer turned rapper and has a great perspective on life. His name he changed to Mod Sun to portray his life change. It is an acronym for Movement on Dreams, Stand Under None. Beautifully summed up in a name, his character is so very admirable.

One of the points he makes has really stuck out to me and I want to focus on it, and I’m pretty sure I’ve quoted it to at least 10 people, half of them were strangers I met on my trip home this past weekend. He says, in a thought such as “I want to stop being so negative all the time,” the universe doesn’t hear words like “want” or “hope” or “need.” All that the universe hears is “negative.” It doesn’t matter what you say you want or need or hope happens, all that matters is WHAT you are thinking about. THINK positive, DO what you want, GO get what you need. We are what we eat, and I think we are what we think. That really struck me as so true. I have been constantly surrounded by thoughts about hope, want, need and breaking the habit of this kind of thinking is going to be hard.

Since reading that book this last Friday on my plane ride to Minneapolis, and implementing many of its simple methods (positiveness and constant friendliness) I have had a hard time NOT smiling. I just want to smile all the time! My face hurt all weekend and even at my weird job I consciously make myself smile and the endorphin’s hit me. Everything bad that happens, will be turned into a good. Bad things happen all the time

and most of the time we can’t do anything about it, like me missing my flight home for Thanksgiving. The only thing we have control of is how we react to those bad things. That reaction could very realistically turn it into a wonderful happenstance. Lets learn how to do this together, as a society and as kindred spirits.

The Jitters, Heebie-Jeebies, and Those Screaming Meemies

Jitters = fancy way of saying “I’m nervous and feeling anxious!” Today, on the cusp of vacation, I have a severe case of the jitters. I looked up the definition(nervousness, another word for jitters: an uneasy psychological state) and ways to calm those pesky feelings down. What I found seemed to be more related to an actual psychological problem. I don’t think the average person has “nervousness issues” like someone who gets anxiety attacks. Anyone can get them of course but, it takes extreme (subjective) circumstances for it to reach that level of intensity.

The kind of jitters I’m talking about are the kinds that drive you to distraction because you can only think of the future. Past and present don’t exist when the jitters are contracted. The only thing that matters in the mind of someone with jitters (i think….?) would HAVE to be the future! I am so focused on everything I need and want to do before my flight leaves on Monday morning that focusing on work is…. impossible. Impossible, I tell you!!

The satisfaction I would get from completing my list, is unreachable while I am tied to this desk and chair. My bottom knows it wants to leave and is falling asleep to punish me for not moving. I have been attempting for months now, to NOT focus on what I want to do with my life simply because right NOW, I must be here. I must be in this corporate world. Even if it is temporary. I must exist here in order to move forward. It’s the pause button my circumstances have pushed for me. I bring this up because, I am on the brink of 10 days of vacation. Even though visiting family is stressful in and of itself, it’s still so much better than where I am sitting… right… now… I’m hoping these days will bring more clarity to what I want my next personal move to be.

I’ve been working on rebuilding my hobbies and although I am limited by salary and so I must adjust what I like to do accordingly and build up supplies (knitting, graphic design, photography, sewing machine, puppy). I’ve recently taken up lyrical writing to attempt to express my feelings. Good luck with that, I think to myself!

I have no clue how to get through this type of jitters, this normal jittery feeling. I, apparently write blog posts. If anyone has helpful tips on dealing more with the disappointing “now”, because of the hopeful future, please post them and let me know.

The struggle is real!

*the only helpful hint I have is, put Hozier on your pandora. He has a calming voice and the station pulls up other random calm and beautiful music.

Song of the Day – It’s A Good Life

I heard this song while I was getting ready for my day and after the past few days I needed that uplifting song. I had to take my boyfriend to the ER the other night (he is fine now!) but it has been a rough couple of days taking care of him, we are both ready for his pain to go away, and this song about freedom helps keep us focused on what we are fighting for. I’ll write about it later but, for now listen to this lovely song by the Kongos! I present to you “It’s a Good Life.”

Yeah we all have had those dreams
O-o-of the sun, and the sea and an island
Where you switch off
It’s a good life
It’s a good life
For me

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

O-o-of the sun, and the sea and an island

Things You Should Do to Have a Good Morning and Sunshine Success – Part 2*

“The longest way must have its close – the gloomiest night will wear on to a morning.”
Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom’s Cabin

“I want to live my life in such a way that when I get out of bed in the morning, the devil says, “aw shit, he’s up!”
Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience

Mornings are generally hard, no matter who you are. There are definitely morning people in this world and even though I think I’m closer to that category I still don’t understand them… I need some kind of routine in the morning, even if it’s just putting make up on the same every day, or I’ll be flustered for a little. BUT, the reasoning behind doing a part two of my morning post is because after my rough start on Monday, we have been getting up early and doing a daily burn stretch routine>. That link isn’t the one we specifically do, but it has some good stretches. It has been AWESOME! I never thought I’d be the instigator but, it’s totally changed my perspective on week day mornings. Maybe not totally, but it has surely helped put me in a better mood all week. Note to self, getting up and having some quiet stretching or yoga in the morning is key to leading a happy healthy life. They say (I think..) that its better to wake up slowly, and I think I had a quote on here about waking up to a smell is the best thing ever. I think in this case, doing a morning stretch is extremely helpful in waking yourself without that alarm clock blaring in your ears, invading on your happy dreams.

One more link I want to share, this concerns anyone with hip/knee/butt pain. Limber 11 is a way to do your own physical therapy. Which means you have no excuse for feeling terrible after work. Get on it!

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive—to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love—then make that day count!”
Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free

Things You Should Do to Have a Good Morning and Sunshine Success

“Morning is wonderful. Its only drawback is that it comes at such an inconvenient time of day.” – Glen Cook, Sweet Silver Blues

“No! I’m not ready, this is still my first cup of coffee!”
Anthony Liccione

I was having trouble waking up this morning and so I needed a whole bunch of motivational quotes to keep me going. Here are some of my favorites! There are just so many I will try not to overload. Moral of the story, if your moving a little slower on this fine Tuesday, its okay because there is so much more to life than just THIS Tuesday. So get out and enjoy those hours in the day that you can.

“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.” – Kevyn Aucoin

“Waking up to a smell is a lot more satisfying than waking up to a noise. Instead of barging in uninvited and yanking you out into reality, smells enter your dreams with a silent knock and a polite “Excuse me?”
Adi Alsaid

“You cry and scream and you stomp your feet and you shout. You say, ‘You know what? I’m giving up, I don’t care.’ And then you go to bed and you wake up and its a brand new day, and you pick yourself back up again.” – Nicole Scherzinger

This is not my photo unfortunately, but it is beautiful.
