Song of the Day – Oceans by Twiceyoung

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! 2015 is going to be awesome! (Be safe tonight y’all!)

I have wanted to post this song since last week when I randomly found them by randomly stalking an old college buddy on

Spotify. In my defense…. I followed him on their because I tend to love 75% of what his music feed tells me he is listening to. That’s a pretty good margin in my head. Through my shameless fan-hood of this person’s music taste, I found Twiceyoung.. and fell in love. I love the whole CD, Little Mind Alot. I have listened to it at work (I quit my job and my last day is Friday!) on repeat at least 4 days in the past 8. I find their harmonies hypnotic and their drum parts uniquely interesting. The song I’m recommending today, Oceans (I seem to want to spell it Ocreans…every time I have typed it today), makes me feel like I am running forward, almost falling forward into my best future yet. “We can’t go back now” seems to signify a lot of my “life theories” because I tend to repeat the same advice to a lot of my friends about “Regret,” the dangerous beast that it is. I love the line “I’m not running after you, I’m not coming after you,” because it symbolizes that impossibility of going back. We must continue to beat and push our way forward. Perspectives change, and who knows how long it will take but…. anyone who is going through a tough time right now, just remember “we can’t go back now” and you will indeed see things differently, you will see what pieces were missing. You’ll be happier paying attention to now, more than what was then.

You may be seeing Twiceyoung more often. #runforward

Lyrics found here.

“I see it different, the way this all turned out, I see whats missing, But I can’t go back now, If we can finish this, You know I won’t look back, I’ll never give in, No we can’t go back now.”

Finding Focus In Different Media

The Daily Post

The main medium for my creative energy is writing — whether I communicate with bloggers and editors, draft a post, or jot down something just for myself or a handful of close friends.

When I get stuck, though, one thing I almost always find useful is to stop thinking with and through words.

My default alternative is music. It might still contain verbs and nouns if it’s a voice-centric genre, but something about the abrupt transition from the written word to the clash of sounds often shakes me out of the writerly malaise I’m experiencing. Music, just like writing, often aims to convey emotion and tell a story, so hearing how a composer deals with these challenges can be incredibly illuminating.

It doesn’t have to be music, of course; it can be cooking, or playing a game, or solving a puzzle. Here is celebrated novelist Nicole Krauss, explaining how looking at visual art has helped her think about…

Is this the end or just the beginning?

Yay! They did it!

I'm Starting A Craft Brewery

We did it!  With the help of countless individuals, family, friends, and our construction crew, we have successfully opened a craft brewery in Vancouver.  On Wednesday 17th, we had a non-posted (soft)opening and it was a huge success.  None of our systems crashed, our beer poured like it should, and we were able to see some close friends and family share in the room we created.  We opened for the weekend, and it went really well.  All our staff showed up for their shift, we didn’t piss anyone off, and our beer poured without any serious problems.

This is also the end of our journey in starting a craft brewery.  I do plan on continuing to blog about running a craft brewery, and what is happening at Strange Fellows, but how that looks and what that means is something that I am not quite sure of yet.  Without a doubt I…

Song of the Day – Anything I’m Not by Lenka

“Time in itself, absolutely, does not exist; it is always relative to some observer or some object. Without a clock I say 'I do not know the time' . Without matter time itself is unknowable. Time is a function of matter; and matter therefore is the clock that makes infinity real.” ― John Fowles, Áristos

“Again time elapsed.” ― Carolyn Keene, The Secret of the Old Clock

Forgotten but not lost! Lenka was forgotten. Her voice and style had slipped into oblivion for about two years now. Two years is a long time to completely forget about an artist. I’m glad she resurfaced because, she gives me hope for my own song writing aspirations. She seems as close to what I could be if I had the perseverance with song writing that is necessary to be successful. I hadn’t heard Anything I’m Not (<– video with lyrics)before today but I really enjoyed its simplicity.

It goes along with my recurring theme of being yourself and being confident in your own person-hood. Be yourself and don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Sometimes you have to define what you are NOT before you can find out what you ARE.

“I will never be, I will never be you. No. I will always be, I will always be me. That I know”

Song of the Day – Afterlife by Ingrid Michaelson

I know…. two Ingrid Michaelson songs in a row! It will be a great start to your weekend though, I promise. This one isn’t really a love song to any one person, so at least it’s slightly different. Actually one of the reasons I love it is because it seems  like she is breaking out of the ballad stereotype and becoming less definable, much like Taylor Swift has been. Afterlife is just beautiful and inspiring. Its got that bounce that just makes me want to clean. Weird I know… But listen and you’ll know what I’m taking about! We are going to be alright ;). Just remember to live like there is no tomorrow.

Enjoy! Lyrics can be found here.

“We all, we all, we’re gonna be alright
We got, we got, we always got the fight in us
We all, we all, we’re gonna live tonight
Like there’s no tomorrow ’cause we’re the afterlife”

Freedom, Pure and Simple

cancellation. In my life, I haven’t ever seen a movie pulled due to fear of repercussions. Movie makers LIKE to make people squirm and stretch their brains. That is the point of making movies, to represent people, things, places, times etc that don’t have the chance to represent themselves. Here in the USA, we have been blessed with freedom of speech and expression, our government knows (for the most part) that humans NEED self-expression, we need that stimulation. Or we will leave. Leave by either checking out mentally and going through life sleepwalking or…. simply leave the country. I am very thankful for this freedom. I am NOT thankful for cyber terrorism or any kind of terrorism for that matter. I am only thankful for it, in a way, because, it shows us how far our society has fallen. If we are able to so easily bow down to an unknown entity whose action has been to leak documents, what does that symbolize? Important documents to Sony have been leaked, sure, but just documents all the same. These hackers could be anyone. If it IS North Korea, our backing down is an even bigger problem. Sony has the right to release or not release any movie it wants to, but backing down like this would be a clear sign to any current terrorist groups that the USA is weak. I would take it as a sign to move. I won’t be surprised if we see more incidents such as this. Perhaps even worse.

I shall not be silenced

I shall not be silenced

This seems to me like bad parenting. When a kid throws a temper tantrum in the store because you said no to a candy bar. Instead of holding your ground, you are so embarrassed by your screaming child that you hurry through the line and give in to his demand. Sure, here is your candy bar, just stop making a scene….. That is what we are saying to the cyber hackers/North Korea. Sure… you can control what we put in our theaters.  Have we, as a nation, forgotten what freedom of speech means? I certainly hope not.

“Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.”

[Special Message to the Congress on the Internal Security of the United States, August 8, 1950]”
Harry S. Truman

Everything Will Change

Must Be This Tall To Ride

I wasn’t allowed to watch MTV or Beverly Hills, 90210 or go to boy-girl parties like the rest of my friends. One of my presents for my 10th birthday was Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure which was rated PG and I’d seen it a bunch of times, but after my mom heard some of the jokes, she took it away from me.

I didn’t think it was cool to have a conservative mom who cared enough about me to worry about things like that so sometimes I’d lie to my friends about why I couldn’t go to a party that everyone else was going to.

I was an only child. I didn’t have any older siblings to help me prepare for what was to come.

Every day growing up was a new experience.

Being friendly and nice to almost everyone got me through. But those school-aged years is when…

Song of the Day – Home by Ingrid Michaelson

Who would have thought someone with a harsh and old fashioned sounding name like “Ingrid” would have such a lovely, smooth, classy voice and style? I’m not sure I would have…. either way, she has talent and has actually made me love the name “Ingrid” as well as get me back to my core strong woman. This song “Home”(video) is simple but I felt it appropriate since I just went home for a visit.  However, my home isn’t so much based in Minnesota any more, or even Arkansas where I spent most of my childhood. My home has become my other half, the person who I can’t wait to see every day and every moment spent with him is meaningful. As cheesy as it is, he has become my home away from home.

BUT just listen and follow along with the lyrics if you’d like and let the song take you back home, addio voi bella gente!   🙂

“I know everything about this place, it wears your face
Even when my body blows away, my soul will stay”

Loveliness and Laughter Among the Living

I haven’t written an “advice” post for quite some time and I think the reason being, I’ve just been too focused on all the positive things happening in my life that I feel unqualified to say much.

However, the reason I’ve been able to focus on the good things more might be a good tidbit to share!

I’ve always “known” that the focus of the mind is what really matters. It’s what gets things done and life moving. Sadly, I don’t think it completely registered until I read one of the best inspirational “self-help” books I’ve found so far. I have “self-help” in quotes because it isn’t so much self-help as much as, this should be common knowledge because it’s so basic and such a simple mindset that everyone should know it. But, like me, a lot of people “know” things but either it hasn’t been said in a way that it really gets stuck in the brain or they honestly haven’t been privy to the kind of experiences and knowledge that I have had access to. At the same time, the information is there for everyone, if you choose to search for it.

The book I’m talking about is

Movement on Dreams, Stand Under None

Movement on Dreams, Stand Under None

called “Did I Ever Wake Up” by Mod Sun. AMAZING BOOK. It’s only 70 pages and $25, I think everyone should invest in this book. He is a drummer turned rapper and has a great perspective on life. His name he changed to Mod Sun to portray his life change. It is an acronym for Movement on Dreams, Stand Under None. Beautifully summed up in a name, his character is so very admirable.

One of the points he makes has really stuck out to me and I want to focus on it, and I’m pretty sure I’ve quoted it to at least 10 people, half of them were strangers I met on my trip home this past weekend. He says, in a thought such as “I want to stop being so negative all the time,” the universe doesn’t hear words like “want” or “hope” or “need.” All that the universe hears is “negative.” It doesn’t matter what you say you want or need or hope happens, all that matters is WHAT you are thinking about. THINK positive, DO what you want, GO get what you need. We are what we eat, and I think we are what we think. That really struck me as so true. I have been constantly surrounded by thoughts about hope, want, need and breaking the habit of this kind of thinking is going to be hard.

Since reading that book this last Friday on my plane ride to Minneapolis, and implementing many of its simple methods (positiveness and constant friendliness) I have had a hard time NOT smiling. I just want to smile all the time! My face hurt all weekend and even at my weird job I consciously make myself smile and the endorphin’s hit me. Everything bad that happens, will be turned into a good. Bad things happen all the time

Flowers in the Winter

Flowers in the Winter

and most of the time we can’t do anything about it, like me missing my flight home for Thanksgiving. The only thing we have control of is how we react to those bad things. That reaction could very realistically turn it into a wonderful happenstance. Lets learn how to do this together, as a society and as kindred spirits.

Like a flower in the dead of winter. Beauty can be found in any situation.

That Fanciful Future and the Musings of a Daydreamer

I have a vision. My thoughts have finally taken their predictable turn to outrageBlue-Marble-by-Nasa-Public-Domain-via-Wikimediaous ideas and notions to make this world a better place.

I should start by saying the TV show on National Geographic called Cosmos aired this year. It is a revamping of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos back in the 70s. It is a continuation of his series as well as an update for us regular people, letting us know whats going on in the scientific world. I have come to realize this term “the scientific world” actually just means “the world.” Science and its consequences and blessings are ALL AROUND US!

287136406_e1b339d67b_oThis leads to a few videos that were brought to my attention today that really provided me with food for thought. The first one is incredibly inspiring and frustrating all at the same time. “We Stopped Dreaming (Neil deGrasse Tyson) Parts 1+2” is just a beautiful summary of how NASA has impacted our every day lives. I will let you watch it now because my points won’t work if you don’t. So, sit down at the computer or grab your phone on your afternoon breaks and watch this video.

Buzz-Aldrin-on-Moon-Apollo-11-1969-NASA-photo-public-domain  Okay, so now that you have discovered how fear drove our country to do great things, but that security that was restored resulted in apathy and a tapering off of natural innovation due to a lack of funds. These lack of funds has led to our country and our government grossly under-appreciating all that science does. Here is a 10 item list of things invented by NASA that I personally had no idea they invented, but I see them every day. These ideas turned into reality have completely changed lives!

Unfortunately, after the fear race with the Soviet Union, the government forgot the urgent need humanity has for science, invention, innovation, and hands on research in order for progress to be made. The way our country is set up, where everything has to be for profit instead of purely for the betterment of living, it is nearly impossible for honest progress to be made. The example that comes to mind is the Lead discovery. Clair Cameron Patterson was a humble scientist who fought for 30 years for lead to be outlawed from being used in everyday items: gas, paint, pencils etc… He had to fight the very government that is supposed to protect us from the sshuttle_launch_NASAelfish companies that throw their weight around. Car companies didn’t want to change the way they made cars because it would cost money. They were able to lobby and lie for 20 years after the first hearing on lead poisoning before the leaders in our country realized they needed to make a drastic change. I wouldn’t say it was too late, but it was sure as hell late. This COMPANY kept our whole country in a stagnant period where we were closed down to learning because if we learned about lead poisoning, that would cause this COMPANY issues. Progress has become too in line with profit. They are NOT necessarily the same thing, although they can definitely work together.

Here is my wild idea that would literally be the coolest thing to flag-ship.

What if there was  a campus like collection of highly technological buildings, full of research tools, in the LargeMagellanicCloudmiddle of the USA, perhaps on the border of Kansas and Colorado where land is relatively cheap, weather is only slightly bipolar and hopefully with the mountains in the background? So lets say we have this place, we build houses that surround the main buildings. These houses would have known and unknown scientists living within, with their families. We would gain these connections through people such as Neil deGrasse Tyson and Elon Musk, who have made science their life. These scientists would research, create,  and invent ideas and then put them into practice. These life changing ideas would then be freely given to the public, maybe they receive royalties from these inventions. However, the main way this could all be possible, would be through YOU. It said that NASA’s budget amounted to 1/8th of a penny from each tax payer. If we could turn this into one penny or ten cents, think about what we could accomplish? Screw the government and lets take progress into our own hands. Lets land on Mars and asteroids! Lets find another home and maybe send settlers. This would be where Science Fiction could become Science Fact.

I think it could change the world. However…… in the end it’s probably 637ea84d3f66aef3cb3498ea4b9c57a1not as possible as the idealist in me would like to think. I think that we need to somehow move towards progressive ideas and inventions that the public has access to, but I highly doubt THIS idea will solve that problem.

Someone do something quick! Before its too late!

The second video I watched is just surprisingly awesome. Science is cool in “Kevin Delaney Makes a Cloud” on the Jimmy Fallon show.
